Welcome to our Spring Concert 2021 showcasing our music centre groups and intermediate and youth ensembles. We hope you enjoy listening and watching!

The running order for the evening is as follows:

Name of group

Piece being performed

The Mandalorian - this is an American space Western television series created by Jon Favreau for the streaming service Disney+.

Ludwig Göransson, the Swedish-born, L.A.-based Oscar and Grammy-winning composer wrote the score for the Mandalorian.

The basis of the main theme was created from Göransson experimenting with a bass recorder, digitally manipulating it to make it more "futuristic". Guitars, a piano, drums, and synthesizers are also featured in the main theme.

MC Strings

Eine Kleine Nachtmusik – First Movement

Eine Kleine Nachtmusik is a 1787 composition for a chamber ensemble by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The German title means "a little serenade", though it is often translated more literally as "a little night music".

The MC strings are performing an arrangement of the first movement of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Do you recognise the famous theme?

Our arrangement is by David Burndrett.

Adios Nonino for String Quartet

Adiós Nonino (Farewell, Granddaddy) is a composition by tango Argentine composer Ástor Piazzolla, written in October 1959 while in New York, in memory of his father, Vicente "Nonino" Piazzolla, a few days after his father's death.

In 1992, American music critic Stephen Holden described Piazzolla as "the world's foremost composer of Tango music".

Highlights From Harry Potter

You can't go wrong with this one! Music from Harry Potter, composed by John Williams and arranged for orchestra by Michael Story. The main themes have been wrapped up into one dynamic medley for orchestra, including: Prologue; Hedwig's Theme; The Quidditch Match; Harry's Wondrous World and Leaving Hogwarts.

MC Concert Bands

Mambo No 5

"Mambo No. 5" was originally composed and recorded by the Cuban musician Pérez Prado in 1949 as an instrumental mambo and jazz dance song.

Mambo No 5 became a worldwide hit in 1999, charting at No. 1 in most European countries and the United States. It was also used by Channel 4 for their coverage of test match cricket between 1999 and 2005.

Our arrangement is by Jay Bocook.

Play That Funky Music

"Play That Funky Music" is a song written by Rob Parissi and recorded by the band Wild Cherry. Wild Cherry frontman Rob Parissi wanted to write a hit song and he did!

The song sold over two million copies.

Severn Arts Music Teachers

Don’t Start Now

With the success of our music centre group, intermediate and youth ensemble videos last term we thought it would be really good to also record a teacher video as a special item for our spring virtual online concert.

"Don't Start Now" is a song by English singer Dua Lipa from her second studio album, Future Nostalgia. This bespoke arrangement is by our very own teacher Elliot Hinton.

WYO Brass

Hallelujah Drive

Hallelujah Drive from Pops for Four is a brass quartet composition by Chris Hazell. Chris is best known in the brass world for his trilogy ‘Brass Cats’ (originally written for Philip Jones Brass Ensemble), based on his experiences with several cat pets that he had at the time.

Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95 – Fourth Movement

The Symphony No. 9 in E minor, "From the New World", Op. 95, B. 178, popularly known as the New World Symphony, was composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1893.

The New World Symphony is the composer’s ninth, and also his last (nine is something of a magical number in the history of music: various composers completed the same number of symphonies, such as Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner and Mahler).
