Applications are now open for two commissions of £1250, open to film-makers / digital artists who are keen to get involved in a cross-arts collaboration - #SpringIsCalling.

The weekend of the 20 March 2021 will mark a year since the first lockdown in England, the closure of theatres and the moment the cultural sector pressed pause due to Covid-19. Falling on the same date this year is also World Storytelling Day and the Spring Equinox.

Severn Arts and other arts organisations across the West Midlands are inviting artists and audiences to join forces on this date in a moment of cultural realignment; a chance to celebrate beginnings or continuations, and a key time to continue charting a path of collaborative online and live events for audiences.

Of the Spring Equinox, performing artist Tyrone Huggins writes:

It is the time of the quickening of the energy of the earth under our feet. It has been characterised as the ‘thunder in the earth’, when seeds are shocked into germination. A time of the awakening and the return of the Sun gods. The reconstitution of what has been broken or disassembled in spiritual and creative blockage. The restoration of creative forces and creative flow with fruitful manifestation.”

The commission

Severn Arts seeks to commission a film-maker / digital artist to collaborate with two creative artists during the period of 6 – 17 March 2021, as they develop and co-create new artistic work exploring the intersections between their different artistic practices and themes around the Spring Equinox, i.e. nature, spring, outdoors, reflection, restarting and growth.

Working closely together, the artists and film-maker / digital artist will produce a short 3-minute film, to be shared across social media platforms on the weekend of the 20 March 2021. The format of the film is open to interpretation, but must showcase a cross-arts, collaborative process of making new work together.

Free training

As part of this collaboration, and tying in with our CPD offer for 2021, Severn Arts will schedule a free mentoring / training session on how to nurture a successful and collaborative creative process when working with others online. This will take place online on Friday 5 March, 2 – 5pm, and it is anticipated that successful applicants will attend this training.

Commissions are valued at £1250 each.

The deadline to apply is midnight, Sunday 28 February 2021.
