Pupils at three Worcestershire schools – Pershore High, The De Montfort School and Bredon Hill Academy – were recently lucky enough to have an insight into the life of a professional touring musician in a masterclass with Sandy Beales, organised by Yamaha UK in partnership with Severn Arts.

Bass guitarist Sandy Beales has toured the world with One Direction as well as performing with acts such as singer-songwriter JP Cooper and American rock band Wheatus. Giving brilliant advice to all aspiring musicians in the audience, Sandy talked about how to make contacts in the music industry, how to make oneself employable as a musician and the incredible amount of work that goes in to preparations for a major tour.

Sandy also demonstrated a number of bass techniques and effects such as phasing, using octave pedals and distortion on songs by Justin Timberlake and Royal Blood.

Now a tutor at the Academy of Contemporary Music in London, Sandy is available for lessons via Skype on his website at

Feedback from the schools has been fantastic:

“What a great event! The students loved the session – at times they all got up and had a dance!
One of our Year 8 girls said that it was the highlight of her time at BHA!”

Jonathan Firth – Assistant Headteacher, Bredon Hill Academy

“It was extremely informative for all students studying music both in relation to careers in music, but also to how to succeed well in life in general.

Sandy was captivating and extremely interesting to listen to and, despite having toured for years with one of the largest band the world has ever seen, he was approachable and happy to field questions from the students.”

Mrs Charlotte Walden – Music / PE and Performing Arts Head of Faculty, The De Montfort School

“I spoke with 3 girls who were in the talk later that afternoon as they are in my tutor group and one of them said the following:

“I thought it was the most inspirational talk I have heard. It’s given me more confidence to go ahead and to pursue my dreams in the future and that with hard work, realising my dreams is achievable”.

A great experience. Thanks so much for organising it.”

Keith Walden – Head of Music, Pershore High School
