Severn Arts, in partnership with Worcestershire County Council, is on the hunt for the county’s 8th Young Poet Laureate!

The Word Up competition is open to first-time poets and established writers as well who are aged 13-19 and study or live in Worcestershire. To enter you are required to submit two poems, one of them on the subject of ‘change’ and the other one on any topic you would like to write about. It could be something that matters to you, an experience you want to share, or it could be about someone close to your heart or a topic that you think should be elaborated on.

The closing day for entering this competition is Monday 31st December 2018 and it is planned to shortlist 12 finalists by Friday 4th January 2019. The grand final will be held at the Hive on Sunday 20th January 2019, where all the finalist will be asked to perform their poems. If you have never performed before, there is no need to be worried, as the coaching on the day will be provided. Even though this is a competition, the atmosphere is inviting and friendly. The winner will be chosen and announced by a panel of well-known writers, including last year’s winner.

The title of Worcestershire’s Young Poet Laureate will last for one year and the winner will be asked to write and perform poems to celebrate special events or occasions in Worcestershire and to act as a champion for poetry.

Rachel Evans, winner of the Worcestershire Young Poet Laureate for 2018, said: “The final was unbelievable. I met so many different people whose poems were about such different things that I didn’t want to leave by the end of it. I heard my name and I was speechless. I am the youngest ever Poet Laureate and that smashed my doubts completely. I am so excited to be added to a list of such successful and passionate young poets and hope that I am, someday, as successful as they have been”.

Exploring the Theme of Change

The ancient philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus (530-470 BC) compared life to a river, which is always changing, full of swirls, peaks and pits.
What does ‘change’ mean to you? Do you believe it is everywhere around us or is it us making the change happen? Let us know in a poem on the subject of ‘change’, let your spirit talk through the pen and do not miss the opportunity to become Worcestershire’s 8th Young Poet Laureate!
This is a great way to inspire others and encourage young people to get involved with literature.
There is no limitation on the length or form, which is the beauty of this competition, allowing you to express yourself in any way you like.
Did we mention you could be paid to write and perform poems throughout the year?
Wait no longer and grab that pen!
