Exploring pathways to inclusive musical participation.

In 2021 Severn Arts received funding from Youth Music for an ambitious project to improve equality, diversity and inclusion practices in music education. The project was carried out by Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire Music Education Hubs working in partnership.

The project entitled 'Fair Play' aimed to improve and embed inclusive practice through workforce development, establishing youth voice, exploring what is/is not working to reduce barriers to musical engagement and inspiring young people’s career choices.

This project is enormously important to us as we want all children and young people in Worcestershire to experience the joy, new skills and social benefits of music-making.  For this to be the case we need to improve equality, diversity and inclusion practices in music education. With this grant from Youth Music and working in collaboration with our partners we can make a real difference and take a lead in ensuring accessible, inclusive arts opportunities for everyone.

Laura Worsfold, Severn Arts CEO

The Fair Play project, supported by Youth Music, using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England was completed in June 2022.

Project Highlights

As part of the project the film 'Pathways into Music Careers' was created to highlight a number of possible careers within music education and the music industry.

Severn Arts carried out a survey in July 2022 with parents and carers, the results of which you can read in the Improving Access to Music Services Report we produced.

We organised a Fair Play Schools Concert Programme presenting a diverse range of concerts in schools across Malvern and Redditch. The schools visited included rural primary schools with under 90 children, as special school, and a secondary academy.

We presented at Music Mark Talk into Action Conference Series 2022. Download the presentation - Exploring pathways to inclusive musical participation.
