Over 650 Worcestershire children and young people performed in a piece specially commissioned by Severn Arts for Make Music Day on Monday 21 June.

‘In Our Reflections’ was commissioned by Severn Arts to provide an opportunity for children and young people of all ages and abilities to be part of an end of year performance and to celebrate Make Music Day. David Cowell composed the wonderful score, now entitled ‘In Our Reflections’ combining it with the lyrics written by Ellie Dart, Worcestershire’s Young Poet Laureate in 2020. Severn Arts then invited children and young people from across Worcestershire to be involved in the performance of the piece which includes instrumental and vocal parts for all abilities.

Over 400 individual and group recordings were sent to Severn Arts by musicians attending Severn Arts music centre groups and ensembles, around 28 schools in Worcestershire, Worcester Young Voices and vocal and instrumental performers living or at school in Worcestershire. From these recordings the brand-new performance of ‘In Our Reflections’ has been skillfully created by Severn Arts team Elliot Hinton and Mike Halliday and will premiered online on Monday 21 June as part of the Make Music Day UK celebrations.

Ellie Dart said: “I was delighted to be asked to write the lyrics for 'In Our Reflections'. The piece has come out better than I could have ever hoped, and I feel privileged to be part of it.”

Ian Hattersley, Deputy Director of Learning, Severn Arts said: “We feel enormously proud of what has been achieved. We have now created a few online performances but none of them have involved anywhere near this number of children and young people and all of them are either playing an instrument or singing, it’s absolutely wonderful!”
