Severn Arts has been awarded a £10,000 grant by Severn Trent to enable its ‘Music Box’ to travel across Worcestershire.

Severn Arts’ Music Box is a travelling music bus that includes a vocal booth, mixing desk, portable digital music-making equipment, and a variety of instruments.

Through this grant from Severn Trent’s Community Fund, the charity will be able to take the Music Box out on the road, travelling county-wide to 15 locations, delivering music-making experiences to young people.

Severn Arts is an independent arts charity that brings participatory creative experiences such as music, arts, and festivals to people across Worcestershire. They offer inclusive cultural activities that widen access to the arts for all, with a focus on young people.

They engage with 5,500 young people each week, lead Worcestershire's Music Education Hub and teach music in and out of schools whilst also delivering an arts programme county-wide.

Jade Gough, Severn Trent Community Fund Officer, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support a brilliant initiative from Severn Arts.

“It’s great that this funding will enable Severn Arts to reach more young people who may not ordinarily have access to such a wonderful resource.

“Their Music Box will improve wellbeing, build confidence in young people, and develop musical and transferable skills such as teamwork.”

Debbie Fawcett, Severn Arts Director of Learning said: “We’re thrilled to receive this grant of £10,000 from The Severn Trent Community Fund to deliver lots of musical visits across Worcestershire in 2022.  Our Music Box offers a range of musical opportunities, and we know that by taking music to where young people already are we can extend our reach into the communities who may not otherwise know about us.”

Severn Trent’s Community Fund was created for community groups and projects that aim to improve community wellbeing:

  • People: Projects that help people to lead a healthier life and gain new skills.
  • Places: Projects that help to create better places to live in and use.
  • Environment: Projects that will help look after our natural environment.
