The Royal Opera House Design Challenge is a hands-on design skills programme for students studying at KS4 and KS5. Students are challenged to follow the processes of a professional designer to meet a brief set by a professional director.

Understand a brief ∙ Research ∙ Develop ideas ∙ Generate concepts ∙ Sketch and hand render ∙ Prototype and complete  ∙ Use design software ∙ Self-evaluate and iterate ∙ Present. 

What the programme provides

A creative learning resource, created with teachers, providing FREE access to up to four creative pathways for students in secondary schools and FE/HE nationally:

  • Secondary (KS4) - Set Design, and Costume Design

  • FE / HE (Levels 3 & 4) - Set Design, Costume Design, Hair, Wigs and Makeup Design, and Marketing Design. 

  • Classroom-based and digital activities -  with strong curriculum links, to give better understanding of creative problem-solving and design process for students, unlocking their imagination and creativity and professional process.

  • CPD - classroom films, lesson plans and resources to use in ways that suit the needs of teachers and students.
